Born in Laguna Beach, California, Skylar Campbell has built a career defined by artistry, versatility, and curiosity. After early training with Victor and Tatiana Kasatsky, he joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2009 and rose to the rank of Principal Dancer in 2018. In 2022, he was invited to join Houston Ballet as a Principal, where he performed until embarking on new artistic projects in 2025.
Campbell’s repertoire spans both classical and contemporary masters. His signature roles include Crown Prince Rudolf in Mayerling (MacMillan), the title role in John Neumeier’s Nijinsky, and originated the title roles in Guillaume Côté’s Le Petit Prince and Will Tuckett’s Pinocchio. Over his career, he has danced dozens of principal and soloist roles by world-renowned choreographers, including George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, John Cranko, William Forsythe, Crystal Pite, Jiří Kylián, Wayne McGregor, Stanton Welch, Marco Goecke, and Ronald Hynd.
His performances have taken him to leading stages across the world, from the David H. Koch Theater in New York to Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Mariinsky-2 in St. Petersburg, Staatsoper Hamburg, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, and the Los Angeles Music Center. He was a finalist at the Prix de Lausanne, won Bronze at the Youth America Grand Prix, and received the William Marrié Award for Dramatic Excellence. In 2015, Dance Magazine named him one of its “Top 25 to Watch.” and in 2025 served as memeber of the Jury at the Prix de Lausanne.
In 2019, Campbell founded the Skylar Campbell Dance Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting artists across North America through performance, curation, and collaboration. With SCDC, he continues to explore how dance can intersect with other artistic disciplines and spaces, championing individuality, creativity, and freedom of expression.
